Sustainability: Going for the Green

Students and faculty took the lead in alternative energy research in the early 1970s, and today our global campus "green print" initiatives include forward-thinking academic programs, global conferences, solar and biodiesel research, and recycling efforts. Call for teams: Global Grand Challenges Summit STUDENT DAY

Undergraduate student teams, of six members each, will be formed before the end of 2014. There are two possible options for a team: Option 1 is for teams to represent a single school of engineering or perhaps regional partnerships between schools. Option 2 is that a team consists of students from two or three countries (with at least 2 students from each country). We have a goal of 30 students representing each of the three countries (US, China, UK), for a total of 90 students, at the Summit in Beijing. Teams will propose and develop a business plan for a start-up based on an idea/concept related to the GCs. The 14 NAE Grand Challenges are outlined at http://www.engineeringchallenges.org/. They fall within the four categories of Sustainability, Security, Health, and Joy of Living. The plan for each team will be developed prior to the summit, starting in January 2015 and ending with the final competition held during Student Day in Beijing in front of a judging panel of entrepreneurs and innovators.

Calling All Makers: Announcing the First-Ever White House 3D-Printed Ornament Challenge

White House 3D-Printed Ornament Challenge! The Challenge, in partnership with the Smithsonian, invites makers, artists, designers, engineers, and anyone interested in 3D modeling and 3D printing to design a winter holiday-inspired ornament. Starting today and running until November 5, 2014, people can head over to Instructables to submit their design and for more details about the Challenge. A selection of the winning ornament designs will be 3D printed and displayed in the White House during the holiday season; featured on the Smithsonian’s state-of-the-art 3D data platform, 3d.si.edu; and will join a small collection of White House ornaments in the political history division of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.

The Science, Mathematics And Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program has been established by the Department of Defense (DoD) to support undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.
