President Edward Guiliano, Ph.D., with his counterpart President Yang Zhen of Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications (NUPT), welcomed 238 first-year students to NYIT-Nanjing at NUPT. Students at NYIT-Nanjing earn bachelor’s degrees from both NYIT and NUPT, and they spend their final year at an NYIT campus in New York.
NYIT-Nanjing’s American cultural center, established in 2011 to promote intercultural understanding, has received a $50,000 grant from the U.S. State Department to sponsor cultural programming during 2014-15. Beverly Butcher, Ph.D., associate professor and English department chair, and director of the NYIT Center for Humanities and Culture at NUPT, announced the good news while sharing plans for this year’s events, which will surround the theme “Folk Arts in New York State.”

Chinese students played their traditional musical instruments in a spontaneous “jam session” with a group of visiting Cajun musicians at NYIT-Nanjing last week. The NYIT Center for Humanities and Culture at NUPT, one of 17 American Culture Centers in China which seek to foster intercultural communication, hosted a group of visitors from Louisiana for a series of meetings with students. Thanks to a grant from the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, the NYIT Center for Humanities and Culture at NUPT will host "Cultures of the American Gulf Coast: Work and Play in Story and Song from Louisiana to Florida." The events will take place 10-11 April 2014.
