Architecture Students Mobilize to Help Rebuild Long Beach, N.Y.

Architecture and design students from NYIT campuses in Old Westbury and Manhattan surveyed damage inflicted by Hurricane Sandy on Dec. 8 in Long Beach, N.Y. They took a bus tour of the area's West End, Central Boardwalk, and Canal District, talked with homeowners, and met with Long Beach Building Commissioner Scott Kemins to discuss using their design skills to support recovery efforts.

A group of 32 students representing the NYIT School of Architecture and Design will visit hurricane-damaged Long Beach, N.Y., on Saturday, Dec. 7, in an effort to inform their plans for a competition on disaster-resistant coastal building and design methods. Their visit is part of Operation Resilient Long Island, one of the school's latest student-led projects emphasizing global architectural leadership.

Architecture Students Plan Rebuilding Workshop and Tour

Students in the NYIT School of Architecture and Design students will be working with Nassau County Emergency Management officials to assist with rebuilding efforts on Long Island and tour the communities of Long Beach and Island Park, N.Y. Upcoming events include:
- Operation Resilient Long Island Workshop on Rebuilding: Thursday, Dec. 6, 12:30-2 p.m. at the Office of Career Services in Old Westbury and Manhattan.
- Tour of Long Beach: Saturday, Dec. 8, 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. A bus will leave the Manhattan campus at 9:30 a.m. and arrive in Old Westbury to pick up students at 10:30 a.m. at Education Hall.
Free Legal Consultations for Nassau County Residents Affected by Superstorm Sandy

The Nassau County Bar Association is now offering free consultations to residents of Nassau County who may be facing mortgage foreclosure of their home or who suffered damage to their homes and belongings as a result of Superstorm Sandy:
MORTGAGE FORECLOSURE CONSULTATIONS:
- Monday, Dec. 3 - 3 to 6 p.m.
- Monday, Jan. 7 - 3 to 6 p.m.
SANDY SUPERSTORM CONSULTATIONS:
- Monday, Dec. 10 - 10 a.m. to 12 noon, and 3:30 to 6 p.m.
- Monday, Dec. 17 - 10 a.m. to 12 noon, and 3:30 to 6 p.m.
It is recommended to pre-register with the Nassau County Bar Association by telephone at 516.747.4070 for consultations. Anyone needing a consultation in a language other than English should make the request when calling to register.

NYIT's Senate Educational Technology committee has compiled a set of instructional technology resources to help faculty members and students make up for lost instructional time caused by Hurricane Sandy and a recent Nor'easter affecting the New York metro area. These technologies can be used with students to have discussions, deliver content, and facilitate interaction when access to a classroom is not possible. Each one has been used by a faculty member for instructional purposes, and the names of faculty and staff members who are willing to support initial attempts at learning these technologies are provided.

Dare to Care Campaign Honors NYIT Staff

NYIT's Vocational Independence Program (VIP) hosted a Thanksgiving luncheon during which staff members from the departments of security, facilities, and food services were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the VIP community in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy and received complimentary t-shirts. The event is part of VIP's Dare to Care Campaign, a campus-wide program promoting respect as a cornerstone value of life.

Volunteer Opportunities - Nov. 16-17

NYIT is organizing daylong volunteer opportunities for staff and students to provide hurricane relief in Sunset Park Brooklyn on Friday, Nov. 16 and Saturday, Nov. 17. The relief site is St. Jacobi Lutheran Church at 5406 4th Avenue (between 54th and 55th Streets). Its nearest subway stop is the R train at 53rd Street. If you are interested in volunteering, email joanne.west@nyit.edu by noon on Thursday, Nov. 15.
NYIT-Manhattan
Volunteers should meet at 9 a.m. at the Edward Guiliano Global Center (1855 Broadway) and leave together to take the subway. Alternatively, meet at St. Jacobi Lutheran Church at 10 a.m.
NYIT-Old Westbury
Volunteers will be picked up at 9 a.m. from the Hall of Fame in the Sports Complex.
