NYIT hosted its first Global Cybersecurity Conference today in Abu Dhabi. Focusing on the theme, "National and Corporate Threats, Protection, and Education," it convened cyber defense professionals, information technologists, business executives, and educators from the Middle East, North America, Asia, and Africa. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, U.A.E. minister of culture, youth, and community development, participated in the event. President Guiliano gave opening remarks at the conference. He noted universities need to "ensure that organizations have the talent to manage risk and a workforce that can spot the potential for risk."
NYIT President Edward Guiliano, Ph.D., was among a select group of government and community leaders who gathered last night at the Emirates Palace Hotel to honor “the Mother of the Emirates,” Her Highness Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak. In a brief speech, President Guiliano discussed the values of education and striving for excellence that NYIT shares with HH Sheikha Fatima. Sheikha Fatima is the widow of the U.A.E.’s founding president, Sheikh Zayed, and is herself a global leader in women’s education. A brief NYIT-produced video, in addition to President Guiliano’s personal statement, noted the impact Sheikha Fatima’s work has had on the U.A.E. and on women across the world.
New York Institute of Technology (NYIT- Abu Dhabi) hosted the Abu Dhabi Blood Bank's Bloodmobile for a campus blood donation day on 5 March 2014. Authorities from the blood bank, associated with Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC), supported the event by sending nursing staff to NYIT's Muroor Road campus to collect blood from NYIT's students and staff.
Teams of business students at NYIT Abu Dhabi recently competed in a case study contest, “Corporate Challenge 2014.” The case study, based on a global company and prepared by School of Management faculty members, challenged the student teams to address critical issues in business. Read more.

Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX) and New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) signed today an agreement facilitating mutual cooperation in the fields of research, institutional development, and training. The agreement was signed at a formal ceremony held at the ADX main offices in Abu Dhabi.
Mr. Abdul Aziz Al Neaimi, Assistant Chief Executive of ADX and Dr. Edward Guiliano, President & CEO of NYIT, signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on behalf of their respective organizations in the presence of senior representatives from both sides. Read more.
The U.S. Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.), the Honorable Michael H. Corbin, and NYIT President Edward Guiliano hosted an evening reception on Feb. 10 in the ambassador’s residence for the Abu Dhabi education and business communities.
President Guiliano and Ambassador Corbin greeted more than 60 guests, including NYIT students, alumni, and local business leaders of organizations such as Etisalat (the U.A.E.’s major telecommunications company), Exxon, Raytheon, and dozens of others. Ambassador Corbin praised NYIT’s accomplishments in Abu Dhabi and around the world, and President Guiliano presented highlights about his vision for global higher education and the contributions of NYIT’s nearly 600 alumni in the Emirates to the region’s knowledge economy.

NYIT-Abu Dhabi and three local partners recently hosted two events designed to educate U.A.E. business executives about cyber threats they face and how to protect their investments. The American Chamber of Commerce in Abu Dhabi (AmCham Abu Dhabi), the Centre of Excellence for Applied Research and Training (CERT), and the BeNeLux Business Council joined with NYIT to support the two events, held on 15-16 January in Abu Dhabi. The first NYIT Global Cybersecurity Conference will also take place in Abu Dhabi, on March 25, 2014. Read more.
The AmCham Abu Dhabi Women in Business Committee is proud to announce that NYIT has signed WOMEN ACHIEVE, an innovative program that promotes the professional advancement of women. WOMEN ACHIEVE was developed by AmCham Abu Dhabi’s Women in Business Committee to encourage companies and organizations to offer women more opportunities to advance to positions of greater responsibility and leadership.
Congratulations to students in the NYIT-Abu Dhabi School of Management who earned a Top 100 ranking for March 4-10 in the Global Business Strategy Simulation Game (GLO-BUS), a weekly competition among more than 3,000 teams from 156 universities worldwide. The online game is an exercise in corporate teamwork. Students run a digital camera company in head-to-head competition against other companies and learn how to make strategic decisions ranging from research and development, to marketing and sales, to production operations. NYIT's "D Company" team participates in GLO-BUS as part of a business policy and strategy capstone course taught during the spring 2013 semester by Associate Professor Faisal Al-Khateeb, Ph.D. Students include Samah Ahmed, Kamal Oberoi, and Zainab Al Junaibi.
Garon Wheeler, Ph.D., campus dean at NYIT-Abu Dhabi, presented "Teachers' Perceptions of Students and the Effects on Student Performance" at the CamTESOL Conference, Feb. 23-24 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. He was also an invited guest at the conference's Regional English Language Teaching Leadership Forum.
Plans are underway for the NYIT-Abu Dhabi graduation ceremony on Monday, May 27, as well as NYIT's main commencement ceremony on the Old Westbury campus on Sunday, May 19. All members of the Class of 2013 are invited to submit photos of their NYIT experiences for a special graduation photo montage to be shown at the main ceremony as well as to enter the student speaker contest at the main ceremony in Old Westbury.
The Honorable Michael Corbin, American ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (pictured center in blue shirt and yellow tie), met with students and faculty on Nov. 27 at NYIT-Abu Dhabi. He spoke about economic innovation and entrepreneurship, and exchanged views with the audience for more than an hour. Corbin, who has served in the U.S. Foreign Service in the Arab world 25 years, proved to be an informative, entertaining, and insightful speaker.
Faculty, admissions staff, and students from NYIT-Bahrain participated in the 2012 NAJAH exhibition, a three-day informational event promoting the Middle East's leading educators, training opportunities, and careers. The exhibition on Oct. 16-18 attracted thousands of visitors, many of them students exploring university programs. NYIT business majors and interior design students met them and the latter displayed their creative work, explaining the processes involved. Faculty members also discussed NYIT programs with potential students.
"Our presence here today underscores the fact that higher education is an international undertaking," H.E. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, the United Arab Emirates Minister of Education and Scientific Research, told graduates at NYIT-Abu Dhabi's sixth graduation ceremony. "It is your generation that must take up the banner of peace and preservation of human dignity and development of our local and global communities."
Sheikh Nahayan received an honorary degree at the ceremony, in recognition of his ongoing support and advancement of higher education, as well as his visionary leadership. Read More.
In her keynote address to attendees of the 4th Dubai Award for Sustainable Transport (DAST) ceremony, NYIT Dean of the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences Nada Marie Anid, Ph.D., praised the United Arab Emirates for their latest Green Development Strategy. Noting that "sustainability is both a social and a corporate responsibility," Anid encouraged the audience, which included Dubai Crown Prince and Chairman of the Executive Council Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to lead the way with its mission towards a globally competent, green economy. As part of a month-long community strategy to educate Emirati students on the perils of driving irresponsibly, Flash Entertainment invited students at NYIT-Abu Dhabi to participate in its “Yasalam Responsibly” road safety campaign.
“The event hosted presentations and a mini competition where students answered trivia for prizes related to Formula One, Ferrari World, and music concerts in Abu Dhabi,” said Jan Wallace, director of operations and external affairs.
Following the Yasalam team’s presentations on the consequences of speeding, not wearing a seat belt, talking on cell phones and texting while driving—the main causes of accidents and fatalities on the road—students signed the Yasalam Responsibility Pledge.
For three days, NYIT-Abu Dhabi staff and faculty members met with thousands of prospective students and visitors from schools, colleges, universities, and local and international companies at this year’s NAJAH exhibition, the Middle East's leading education, training, and careers exhibition.
The event provided a forum for NYIT employees to inform local and expatriate students interested in the value of NYIT’s global and local programs—particularly the design and implementation of the university’s bachelor’s degrees and newly designed and improved Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degree.
“This ‘glocal’ approach expands the career opportunities for NYIT students — many Emirati and expatriate participants interested in studying in the United States were happy to hear about our extensive range of program offerings in New York,” said Jan Wallace, director of operations and external affairs.

Director of Operations and External Affairs Jan Wallace welcomed the incoming Class of 2015 to the NYIT-Abu Dhabi campus orientation on Sept. 25. The new students attended sessions geared to better acquaint them with the processes of admission, registration, and library and career services.
“We like to stress the personal attention that students receive on our campus, where faculty and staff really do know the students,” said NYIT-Abu Dhabi Campus Dean Garon Wheeler, Ph.D.. “No one can get lost in the crowd.”
