The School of Education at New York Institute of Technology offers two Master of Science in Childhood Education degrees. The 45-credit master degree can be taken fully on-line and leads to New York State initial certification and was designed for applicants with a bachelor's degree (and little or no teaching experience or preparation) who are seeking certification at the elementary (grades 1-6) level. The program includes opportunities for candidates to participate in supervised school experiences throughout their coursework and includes a professional student teaching sequence. The Master of Science in Childhood degree is nationally recognized by the Association for Childhood Education International.
The 36-credit Master of Science in Childhood Education degree is designed for teachers who have initial certification and wish to qualify for professional certification in their first area and initial certification in childhood education. Graduates of the program are able to integrate instructional technology throughout content study, are capable of planning and selecting strategies and materials that foster multicultural understanding, and have the knowledge and skills needed to engage children in successful constructivist learning practices. The program incorporates instructional technology throughout the curriculum. Program content and experiences are aligned with state certification requirements and successful completion of all parts of the program leads to endorsement for certification.
The Master of Science in Childhood Education leading to initial certification has recently been approved by the New York State Education Department to be offered fully online in addition to our traditional on-campus classes. The Master of Science in Childhood Education leading to professional certification offers courses online, hybrid, and face-to-face.
