Welcome to the Department of Nursing

The demand for nurses, especially in specialty areas, is projected to increase dramatically in the next decade. NYIT's baccalaureate nursing program allows students to seize opportunities in this growing profession with its uniquely strong emphasis on transcultural nursing - including a sensitive and in-depth focus on the health beliefs and values of various cultural groups. Our students graduate with this understanding and an outstanding competitive edge for practice in hospital facilities, private practices, schools, organizations, and community agencies - enabling them to respond effectively to the health care needs of a changing global society.

NYIT's nursing program prepares students for a specialization in transcultural nursing. Transcultural nursing provides a vital, holistic approach to care that gives nurses the ability to go beyond treating a patient's symptom.  Transcultural nursing takes patient care to an even higher level by incorporating the cultural beliefs and experiences of patients and their health-care professionals. Treatment plans for patients can be tailored to culturally based health-care practices, beliefs, traditions, communication styles, family roles, dietary preferences, and more.

NYIT's degree program incorporates this approach in the classroom and during the clinical practice phases of the program, providing students with the ability to become highly effective health care practitioners in a variety of settings.

Program Information At A Glance: Talking Points
NYIT's four-year program in nursing, leading to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, is located in the Old Westbury (Long Island), NY campus. Upon graduation, students are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN Licensing Exam. State of the Art Nursing Labs, including patient simulation models for clinical practice, enhance the teaching-learning environment.  Our faculty consists of highly experienced professionals who have vast educational, clinical and leadership experience.  They are committed to teaching, advising and mentoring students to foster academic and professional success.

This four-year program is composed of two phases.  The Pre-Clinical Phase, the first two years, consists of courses in the liberal arts and sciences.  The Professional Phase, the last two years, consists of core Nursing courses and supportive courses.  The recruitment and retention of students from under-represented groups in nursing into the Baccalaureate level of Nursing education is critical for assuring quality care in serving diverse populations.  As many in these under-represented groups may also be from disadvantaged backgrounds, our program seeks to facilitate the completion of nursing program through structured mentoring, support protocols and advisement.
