Choosing the Right Major

The choice of a major is important, but it shouldn’t cause anxiety. If you’re undecided, here are some suggestions:

The major should advance your interests and goals. So first look into yourself and ask:

  • What courses do I like the most?
  • What am I good at?
  • How will the major help me live a fulfilling life?

Then ask:

  • Which majors give me flexibility?
  • What fields will matter tomorrow?
  • Which will let me make a contribution to our great and challenging world?

You can explore the possibilities in your freshman coursework at NYIT. You can also gain insights from our experienced, future-oriented career counselors, and talk to upperclassmen and grad students.

  • FOCUS Online: (enter Access Code NYIT) An online assessment and occupational exploration tool. (**This is the new version of Focus. If you already have a Focus account, you will need to create a new account and then choose the option to import your data to the new system)
  • O*NET, developed and maintained by the U.S. Department of Labor, features constantly updated information for more than 1,000 job titles. It lists characteristics necessary for specific career areas related to interests, work values, and abilities as well as a list of knowledge and skills (i.e. critical thinking, writing, etc.) needed for specific jobs. All you need to do is click on "What It Takes."
  • What Can I Do With My Major? is a listing of majors linked to potential careers (pdfs).
  • Professional Associations and Other Resources organized by field of study to assist you in your career research.

Remember - Your major doesn’t lock you into a career. Astronaut Sally Ride majored in English, and former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina studied medieval history and philosophy, for instance. A network of pathways lies between you and your destination.
