The School of Education was officially formed in 1991 and was built on a foundation of programs in teacher education and educational technology that existed at NYIT since the early 1970's. Today, it has grown to include preparatory and advanced professional study for P-12 teachers, school counselors, school building leaders, educational technologists and professional trainers. In the past five years, more than 1,000 teachers, counselors, supervisors, and principals in the New York metro area have received their training from the NYIT School of Education and are now serving students in public and private schools.
The New York State Department of Education ranks NYIT's teacher education near the top. Our graduates' pass rates on the state teacher certification exams (NYSTCE) are consistently above average. Our long-term partnerships with the UFT and Teacher Centers not only assure that our programs are aligned with the needs of our community schools, they assure that our programs are easily accessible to students in nine counties: Brooklyn, Nassau, Manhattan, Queens, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Sullivan, and Westchester.

Graduates of SOE Teacher Education programs perform very well on the New York State Teacher Certification Exams (NYSTCE). In fact, according to data published by the New York State Department of Education, every teacher candidate who completed their program of study in 2005-2006 and 2007-2008 passed both the ATS-W and LAST examinations. NYIT's fiber optic network is one of the fastest digital pipelines on the east coast. The recently installed infrastructure makes possible extremely fast data, voice, and video transmissions for DVD quality video conferencing, remarkably fast wireless Internet access, and multimedia applications.
In addition to providing a number of computer labs and computer workstations throughout the three campuses, most buildings provide wireless connectivity. The college has established minimum requirements for computer ownership/availability. All School of Education students are encouraged to purchase wireless laptop computers consistent with the guidelines. Course requirements may also include the use of specific software, e.g, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. Please check with your faculty advisor for specifics for your program.
