About the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences

School Mission

The School of Engineering and Computing Sciences prides itself on its high-quality undergraduate and graduate programs that prepare students for advanced studies and challenging positions in business, government, and industry. The school is guided in this mission by the three tenets embraced by NYIT: the professional preparation of students, applications-oriented research, and access to opportunity for all qualified students.

Integral to success are our faculty’s dedication to teaching, scholarship, and service; the support of NYIT alumni, industrial advisory boards, friends and employers; and the college's state-of-the-art facilities that provide students with a solid foundation for achievement.

To accomplish its mission, the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences:

  • Accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (CAC) of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. (ABET Inc.) for programs in Electrical and Computer Engineering in Old Westbury and Manhattan, and for Mechanical Engineering in Old Westbury

  • Patents in computer graphics and animation
  • Pioneered research in computer graphics and animation
  • Patents in high definition television
  • NYIT patent was considered as one of four patents by FCC for adoption
  • Patents in hybrid electric vehicles. Project, sponsored by GM, Ford and others, produced a prototype that won a first place award in a national competition sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy
  • Leadership on the use and implementation of alternative fuel and hybrid technology for mass transportation and unmanned flying vehicles
  • U.S. Air Force sponsored research in target identification and pattern recognition system in high-resolution radar profile
  • Residential multimedia network development featuring Bellcore’s patented packet video and Internet access systems
  • Over three decades of outreach and research programs, supported by the Department of Energy and the New York State Energy office
