Central Advising Center
The Central Advising Center at NYIT develops, promotes, and supports effective academic advising programs. NYIT students receive their primary advising from assigned faculty within their academic department. The Central Advising Center supplements departmental academic advising initiatives.
With the assistance of information technology and videoconferencing, based on sound advising and teaching skills, the center provides timely and accurate information about NYIT academic requirements, policies, procedures, and resources. The center also provides student assistance with inter-school transfer process and general advising. Specific responsibilities of the Central Advising Center include, but are not limited to:
- providing general academic advisement to undergraduate students
- assisting students with change of major process
- monitoring students on probation
- assisting in the administration of Phi Eta Sigma and Golden Key honor societies
- coordinating placement exams
- developing advising resources for faculty, staff, and students
- providing professional development workshops for NYIT advising faculty and staff
Faculty advisors:
- serve as a resource, providing information about NYIT's academic programs and institutional requirements in order to assist students in developing the most coherent plan for their college years.
- act as a liaison between students and the NYIT community, referring them to areas of assistance and familiarizing them with the resources provided by the institution to meet whatever needs and goals they might have.
- assist students in understanding the nature and purpose of higher education and help them develop responsibility for the direction and completion of their degree program.
Faculty advisors' responsibilities include, but are not limited, to:
- Providing guidance in the selection of programs of study, construction of class schedules, and explanations of academic procedures
- Helping the student explore goals and plans pertaining to the student’s academic and occupational future
- Serving as liaison to communicate the concerns of advisees to appropriate college personnel
- Meeting with the student at agreed time intervals for feedback and planning
- Providing practical supervision and monitoring of the student’s academic progress
- Providing counseling in decision-making and the assumption of personal responsibility
- Providing referral assistance in instances when the advisee needs trained or professional help with such things as psychological or emotional problems, career options, various forms of testing, and senior college information.
Your students’ role in academic advisement:
As young adults, students must assume responsibility for the completion of all courses and ultimately the attainment of their desired degree. At NYIT, students are encouraged to meet with their academic advisor and faculty mentor at least once per semester. Additional student responsibilities include, but are not limited, to:
- Willingness to assume responsibility for his or her own growth and development
- Be receptive to feedback and coaching
- Accurately prepare all forms
- Ask questions
- Be familiar with the college catalog
- Be familiar with the colleges policies, procedures, and important dates
- Know what school and major you are enrolled in
- Know your degree requirements
- Pay attention to schedules, deadlines, and appointments.
