Honors Program

Eligibility

Incoming first-year students will be invited to be part of the honors program based on a review of the following:

  • High school grade point average (GPA) and rigor of student’s high school program (85 GPA or higher)
  • Standardized test scores with at least 1100 or higher SAT or ACT composite of 24
  • Extracurricular and service activities
  • Recommendations
  • Expressed interest in joining the honors program (as indicated on application or otherwise)

Transfer students from another two-year or four-year college may apply to the honors program if they have a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher. Transfer students must have at least four semesters in attendance at NYIT to complete their degree.

NYIT students (current NYIT sophomores) can be nominated by an NYIT faculty member to the honors program based on outstanding academic performance and a cumulative GPA of at least 3.4.

Description

Honors students participate in honors sections of core curriculum courses, which fulfill your graduation requirements and offer enhanced intellectual stimulation and fulfillment in an environment that fosters discussion and problem-solving. This program does not entail extra coursework. Other activities include: lecture series with distinguished faculty and guests; cultural and educational outings; social gatherings with peers and faculty; participation in the Honors Students Advisory Board; and the selection/recruitment of new Honors students.

Upon graduation, if you've completed all Honors Program requirements (see below), you will receive an honors distinction on your diploma. 

Participation Requirements

  • To remain in the Honors Program and graduate with honors distinction, you must:
  • Maintain a GPA of at least 3.0 throughout your attendance at NYIT
  • Complete at least five honors classes while attending NYIT
  • Participate in Honors Program activities and events
  • Keep the Honors Program office informed of your contact information
  • Represent the program through academic achievement and contribution
