International Students - Admitted
When planning your arrival, it is good to read and review the information provided in the Pre-Arrival packet that was sent with your I-20. This packet has a checklist you can follow to help you organize your preparation, and also includes information on traveling to the United States, transportation, tuition and payments, orientation, placement exams, housing, and insurance, as well as preparing to apply for your F-1 student visa.
If you have not yet received an I-20 form from NYIT, please contact the Office of Admissions. The submission of your financial affidavit of support and bank statement may be pending, you may need to show additional funds, or the release of your I-20 SEVIS record (if you are currently in the United States) may still be pending from another school.
Important Note: Before choosing which school is right for you, it is always a good idea to research the climate and the type of environment you will be living in, as these factors can vary from state to state. For more on the weather and living in New York, please see our page on Living in the USA.
Upon Arrival:
All International students must meet with the International Student advisor at your campus location. All F-1 International students must receive an I-20 form from NYIT prior to registration, even if you are currently in the United States; and that I-20 must be presented to the International advisor, as well as your visa and I-94 card.
Students that are currently in the United States and are transferring to NYIT from another school will need to report to the designated International Advisor to pick up the I-20 form, as this form will not be mailed within the United States.
Please note that International students will have a separate orientation. Attendance at orientation is mandatory. See more information about arriving on campus and International orientation.
Undergraduate Students:
International freshmen students that have no prior college credits will need to take both the Math and English placement exams prior to registration. Freshman students will also be responsible for submitting any pending documents to the Office of Admissions, such as proof of high school completion and final high school transcripts.
International transfer students will need to contact the Admissions Office for a preliminary transfer credit evaluation to find out if a placement exam is needed. All undergraduate transfer students that have attended college overseas must acquire a WES, Globe, or other recognized evaluation agency report. This is needed before any transfer credit evaluation can be completed on your behalf. For more information, see the WES or GLOBE Web sites.
Placement Exams - Undergraduate Students
For International students newly arriving to the United States, the placement exams will be offered daily during the last week of August and the first week of September on a first come, first serve basis. Appointments will not be necessary. These exams will be offered at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday. Please try to arrive about 30 minutes early.
- Old Westbury students must report for sign-in to the main lobby in the Harry Schure Hall building.
- Manhattan students will need to sign in at the Admissions Office on the first floor of the New Technology Building on 61st and Broadway.
Graduate Students:
International graduate students who score below a 550 on the TOEFL written test, below a 213 on the computer test, below a 79/80 on the Internet-based exam, or below a 6.0 on the IELTs exam are required to take the English Proficiency Exam.
If you must take the English Proficiency Exam, contact the English Language Institute Coordinator, Linda Comac, at lcomac@nyit.edu or 516.686.7686. An appointment must be made with the Coordinator in order to take the exam.
