College is very different from anything you experienced in high school. Nearly every student needs some help in making the adjustment to a new schedule, location, more challenging coursework, new social interactions, and additional demands on personal time. That's why NYIT created the First-Year Experience, a program designed to ease your transition and help you get the most out of this unique, demanding, but ultimately rewarding time in your life. It includes:
Summer Reading Project
The goal of summer reading is to engage students early in their college experience through campus-wide discussions and debate, and to build and enhance a sense of community among students, faculty, and staff. The book is selected by the First-Year Reading Committee and all first-year students are required to read it during the summer and participate in related activities during the academic year. The 2012- 2013 book selection is: Choosing Civility-The Twenty-five Rules of Considerate Conduct by P.M. Forni. During the Summer Orientations and the Fall semester, students will research and explore all sides of the issues the author raises, participate in discussions and debates led by faculty, listen to the different viewpoints of outside speakers, and ultimately shape and substantiate their own thinking on the issues.
Jump Start Advantage Program – Summer 2013
NYIT offers its first-year students an opportunity to get a head start on their college careers by taking part in the Jump Start Advantage Program. This five-week program runs from July 8 through Aug. 16, 2013, and includes the courses: Foundations of Inquiry, Developmental Mathematics, and Foundations of Speech Communication.
AlcoholEdu
Mandatory for all first-year students, AlcoholEdu is an online alcohol education and prevention program. Completion of the approximately two hour online program is a university requirement and a requirement for FCIQ 101. Transfer students are NOT REQUIRED to complete AlcoholEdu. More information will be available by July 2013.
Living Learning and Commuter Communities
The Manhattan campus is offering entering first-year students the option of being a part of these Learning Communities for one academic year (Fall 2013- Spring 2014). Students who will be residing at the Riverside Residence will have the option of participating in the Living Learning Community, and commuter students will also be able to participate in a Commuter Learning Community option.
Individual and Group Tutoring
NYIT's Learning Center provides free individual and group tutoring services, and pays particular attention to first-year students who may need extra help making the transition.
