Orientation

SOAR Toward Excellence in Summer 2011

NYIT's new student orientation marks the beginning of exciting, challenging, and rewarding times ahead of you. All incoming first-year students must attend orientation, where current students, staff, and faculty will welcome you and your family members, prepare you for your journey through college, and answer all your questions. You will also get to meet your new classmates and have some fun. Our goal for orientation -- and for your entire time at NYIT -- is to ensure that you have a worthwhile, informative, and enjoyable experience.

NOTE: This summer, the Manhattan campus is offering an optional overnight orientation to first-year undergraduate students.

Orientation Dates

Manhattan Campus    Old Westbury Campus
July 12-13, 21-22   July 13, 20, 27
Aug. 2-3, 25-26, 30* Aug. 3 or 10
* Transfer students  Sept. 2-3

Orientation Registration

All incoming students will receive information about orientation and placement exams in early May.

REMEMBER THESE DATES:

New Student Welcome Day: Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011
Classes Start: Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011

Placement Exams

Each incoming student must register for one placement examination date. Because exam space is limited and fill up quickly, it's a good idea to register as soon as you receive information about orientation.

Special Needs: If you have special requirements because of a disability, please contact the Office of Counseling and Wellness Services at 212.261.1770, so that proper arrangements can be made for accommodations during orientation and placement testing.

Summer Reading

The 2011 First-Year Summer Reading novel is Malled, My Unintentional Career in Retail by Caitlin Kelly, who shares a two-year experience working at retailer North Face. The former journalist details her life in the store, the pressures of the job, economics of the retail industry, labor system in place and more.

Jump Start Advantage Program – Summer 2011

NYIT offers its first-year students an opportunity to get a head start on their college careers by taking part in the Jump Start Advantage Program. This five-week program runs from July 6 through Aug. 9, 2011, and includes the following courses: Foundations of Inquiry, and either Developmental Mathematics or Foundations of Speech Communication. The cost for six or seven credits is only $2,250, a savings of more than $2,500 over the regular semester cost.
