Studying in the United States
NYIT has an outstanding reputation in the international community for preparing students for real-world, 21st-century careers. Our ethnically and culturally diverse student population contributes to and benefits from NYIT's commitment to teaching with a global perspective. And we have professional international student advisors and support services on each campus to meet the special needs of international students. Our many international student organizations provide social and cultural activities throughout the year. (If you are interested in studying at one of NYIT's many international locations, visit NYIT Worldwide.)
Timeline
Your passport to an NYIT education is as easy as 1-2-3. Follow these steps to get your I-20 and student visa.
1. It's important to you submit all of your documents to the Office of Admissions in sufficient time for us to process all the paperwork and send your I-20 form to you.
Use the following dates as a guideline (You can submit documents earlier, but remember that all bank statements must be current within six months of the date of submission):
- Fall semester: July 1
- Spring semester: Dec.1 of the previous year
2. Once you receive the I-20 form from NYIT, take it, along with your NYIT acceptance letter and a notarized Affidavit of Support and bank statement to the U.S. Embassy or consulate in your country. For further information on obtaining the F-1 visa, go to www.UnitedStatesVisas.gov.
3. Upon entering the United States, present your NYIT I-20 form to a U.S. immigration official along with your F-1 visa (stamped in your passport) and I-94 form (obtained on the plane).
Important Notice:
If you are unable to obtain an F-1 student visa (which requires an I-20 form) in time to begin classes, you cannot enter the United States on a B-1/B-2 visitor visa and register for classes.
If your I-20 form does not arrive in time for you to obtain the F-1 visa but you know you are eligible for the I-20, you can ask your country's visa office for a B-2 visa stamped "prospective student." Contact the NYIT Office of Admissions for a letter to present to the visa office, as well as a statement of financial responsibility. Please be aware that not all countries offer this option.
