Important Pre-Arrival Information

Please read the following information carefully. These pages outline steps you must take before and upon your arrival in the United States (print out pre-arrival information as a PDF).

 

Transportation

Transportation to NYIT from the airport will not be provided. Please refer to the enrollment for international student information included with your acceptance package for detailed directions to our campuses via public transportation and automobile.

Manhattan campus:

Old Westbury campus:

All students are required to register for an Orientation date.

 

You will be receiving information regarding meal plans and registration in the coming months. If you have questions, please contact your campus-assigned international student advisor at oie@nyit.edu. Vegetarians: See Housing and Residential Services section.

Freshman Students

Upon arrival, all undergraduate freshman students are required to submit to the Office of Admissions any pending documents of proof of high school completion. All undergraduate freshman must take the English and Math Placement exams. Placement exams will be given Monday-Friday, Aug. 31 - Sept. 4 at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. We strongly encourage you to register for the exams online. Appointments are being accepted in the order of the request. Once the semester begins on Sept. 8, if you did not yet take the exam, you will need to visit the Learning Center to be tested. Students who will be in the United States prior to Aug. 25 can register for a summer exam online. For questions regarding the placement exam dates, please contact the Office of Admissions at admissions@nyit.edu.

All freshman will be registered for classes with an advisor immediately following the Placement Exam.

All undergraduate students that have attended any college overseas must acquire a WES, Globe, or other recognized evaluation agency report. This is needed before any transfer credit evaluation can be completed on your behalf. To get more information about WES or Globe, you can go to their website at www.wes.org or e-mail info@globelanguage.com.

All First Year Students at NYIT participate in Summer Reading. The goal of summer reading it to engage students early in their college experience through campus-wide discussions and debate, and to build and enhance a sense of community among students, faculty, and staff. The 2009-2010 book selection is When The Emperor Was Divine by Julie Otsuka. During the fall semester, student will research and explore all sides of the issues the author raises, participate in discussions and debates led by faculty, consider the different viewpoints of outside speakers, and ultimately shape and substantiate their own thinking on the issues.

Transfer Students

All undergraduate transfer students must report to the Office of Admissions for a transfer credit evaluation, if you have yet received one, to determine if a Math or English placement exam is needed. Only students who do not have transfer credit for WRIT 101, Composition I or the first required Math course for their program need to take the placement exam for the course they do not have credit in.

All transfer students are required to register with the help of an academic advisor their first semester. After checking in and completing the placement exams, if required, meet with your academic advisor. Contact your advisor. If you have a problem reaching an advisor please contact the Student Solutions Center at askssc@nyit.edu.

Graduate Students

Graduate students who scored below a 550 on the TOEFl written test, below a 213 on the computer based test, below a 79 on the internet based exam, or below a 6.0 on the IELTS exam are required to take the English Proficiency Exam and must contact the English Language Institute Coordinator, Linda Comac, lcomac@nyit.edu or 1.516.686.7686. Once you have taken the English Proficiency Exam and have met with Linda Comac, please contact your academic advisor listed on your Admissions Terms and Conditions letter to select your fall courses and register for classes.

 


Health Insurance and Immunization

All international students holding an F-1/J-1 visa are automatically enrolled in NYIT's Plan 1 Basic Accident Medical Expense Benefit and the Plan 2 Basic Sickness Medical Expense Benefit and Supplemental Accident and Sickness Medical Expense Benefit through Aetna Student Health. This enrollment is mandatory. The cost of the policy is automatically charged to your account with the Office of the Bursar each semester. Visit the insurance web site at www.aetnastudenthealth.com to obtain a full explanation of benefits, cost enrollment, medical claims form, and deadlines for enrollment. Please e-mail Sim Basta, Coordinator of Wellness Services, at ows@nyit.edu regarding any additional questions you may have.

New York State Public Health Laws 2165 and 2167 require all students enrolled for at least six (6) semester hours, or equivalent per semester, to provide written proof of immunization against Measles, Mumps, and Rubella, and a Meningococcal Meningitis Vaccination Response. Students must submit a completed copy of NYIT's Student Immunization Form to the Office of Wellness Services prior to registration for course. Please e-mail the Office of Wellness Services at ows@nyit.edu regarding any questions you may have.


Tuition and Fees

It is very important for students to understand that the tuition and living expenses fees listed on the I-20 are only estimates and not the exact fees. Please refer to the NYIT catalog or our page for tuition and fees. NYIT fee information is also enclosed in the acceptance package.
