Transfer FAQs

Naturally, you want credits from your college coursework to count toward your NYIT degree. NYIT has a generous credit acceptance policy, and upon your admission to NYIT, our evaluators will review your transcripts and decide what coursework fits the requirements of your NYIT major. It's important that we receive all college transcripts in a timely manner and get final transcripts (including final grades) even if you've already been accepted.

I'd like to apply and find out how many transfer credits I'll receive. How do I do this?
The quickest way to begin the transfer process is to schedule a meeting with an admissions counselor for an “on-the-spot” admission review and transfer credit evaluation. At this meeting, an admissions counselor will review your application and documentation. Upon your admission to NYIT, our transfer evaluations staff will review your college coursework and decide how it fits the requirements of your NYIT major. To schedule an on-the-spot review, please contact us at 800.345.NYIT or e-mail us at transfer@nyit.edu. This admissions review and transfer credit evaluation can usually be done in under an hour.

When you meet with an admissions counselor, please bring copies of transcripts from every college you've attended. If you have completed fewer than 24 college credits, you will also need to bring a copy of your SAT I/ACT scores (if you have taken them), and your high school records (e.g., final high school transcript). Final, official college transcripts are not necessary at this point, but we must receive these official documents by the second week of your first semester at NYIT.

Will an admissions counselor visit my college?

NYIT admissions counselors make personal visits to many two-year colleges in the tri-state area. During these visits, counselors can provide admissions advisement, make on-the-spot admissions decisions for most majors, and can review your record for transfer scholarship eligibility. How are my credits transferred to NYIT?


After you're accepted at NYIT, admissions representatives give your transcripts to transfer credit evaluators. They review your transcripts on a course-by-course basis for credit that is applicable toward your major. The evaluators create a customized degree map that shows the total number of credits transferred and the remaining coursework you need to complete your degree at NYIT. This map is necessary for your advisor to help you with first-time registration. You should review it carefully and save it so you can refer to it as you continue your studies.

Are there admissions counselors available to guide me through the transfer process?
Our admissions team is happy to provide personal attention and guidance about different majors and requirements for entrance into any NYIT degree program. Transfer credit evaluators are also available to answer specific questions about transfer credit. The Office of Admissions is open during the school year Monday and Tuesday, 9 a.m. - 7 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday, 9 a.m. - 6 p.m., and Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.on our Old Westbury and Manhattan campuses. Can courses I took at my previous institution(s) be considered for transfer credit by NYIT?
Yes. Coursework is considered for transfer credit if the school at which it was taken is certified by a regional accreditation body such as the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Coursework is also considered from other qualified schools that are acceptable to the standards of NYIT. What is the maximum number of credits I can transfer?
The maximum transfer credit for students from an accredited bachelor's program is the difference between the required 30 credits in residency at NYIT and the total credits required for the NYIT degree. For example, if an NYIT degree requires 120 credits, students transferring from a bachelor's program are eligible for a maximum of 90 transfer credits. NYIT will accept up to 70 credits from appropriately accredited two-year schools or associate's degree programs.

Note: courses can be transferred only if they apply to a student's requirements for his or her chosen major at NYIT. Additional coursework not directly applicable to specific degree requirements may transfer as elective credit. Transfer credit will not be awarded in excess of degree requirements.

Will my GPA from my previous institution(s) transfer to NYIT?
No. Transfer credit is recorded with the designation "TC" on an NYIT transcript and will not count toward GPA. Grades from courses transferred may be used in certain circumstances to help determine specific honors at graduation.

What grades are eligible for transfer?
Grades of C- or better are transferable with exceptions for certain majors.

Grades of D+ and D are acceptable only under the following conditions:

  • Grades were earned in courses at a school where an associate's or bachelor's degree was completed with a cumulative 2.0 GPA and the courses counted toward the degree, or
  • Grades were earned in courses at a school where at least 30 credits were completed with a 2.5 GPA.

Students may be advised to retake some courses in which they earned C+, C, C-, or D grades if they are seeking internships or admission to certain professional schools.

Grades of D- are not transferable.

I am an international student. How do I transfer credits from an institution abroad?
You need to submit all official transcripts to NYIT. In addition, you will need to submit transcripts for review to an approved foreign transcript evaluation agency, such as World Education Services and Globe Language Services. These agencies certify accreditation status of the school, attendance, duration of study, type of degree, as well as grades and number of credits earned in U.S. terms. Students are also advised to submit course descriptions/outlines/syllabi to facilitate the transfer evaluation process.

Please note: This transcript evaluation report is required for NYIT to consider your international coursework for transfer credit. You should start the process as early as possible to ensure your credits are prepared before registration.

How do I find out about NYIT's scholarship and financial aid program?
Transfer scholarships are available for admitted, full-time students who have completed at least 24 credits with a minimum 2.5 GPA in their college coursework. Scholarship eligibility and amount is determined after acceptance to NYIT and receipt of transcripts for previous college coursework. Students should fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as early as possible to be eligible for the maximum consideration for need-based financial aid. Can I get college credit for life or work experience?
NYIT's special Prior Learning Evaluation Program was designed to give students the opportunity to earn college credit for prior college-level learning relevant to their curriculums.  All matriculated and registered NYIT students maintaining a 2.0 average are eligible to apply for credit, although transfer students must also have their transcripts officially evaluated before applying for credit.  Student knowledge gained outside the traditional college classroom may be evaluated by: 

  • proficiency examinations
  • non-collegiate course evaluations, and 
  • portfolio evaluations.

Please be aware that evaluation fees are charged.

Proficiency Examinations
Credit for degree requirements and elective courses can be earned by attaining satisfactory scores on proficiency examinations.  Excelsior College Examinations, the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) and DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSSTs) are standardized testing programs that cover numerous academic areas.  NYIT is a test center for DSST.  NYIT has developed its own challenge examinations in areas not covered by Excelsior, CLEP, or DSST.  Challenge examination information is available in the registrar's office.

Non-Collegiate Course Evaluations
The New York State Education Department's Program on Noncollegiate Sponsored Instruction (PONSI) and the American Council on Education (ACE) have evaluated and recommended credit for many noncollegiate courses.  NYIT honors these recommendations for elective credit and may award prior learning credit for required courses on this basis.  Courses that have not been reviewed by PONSI or ACE but meet certain criteria will also be evaluated on an individual basis by the college. 

Credit for military coursework and Military Occupational specialties (MOSs) may be granted.  ACE has evaluated much of this coursework, and credit toward electives is awarded based upon the ACE recommendation.  Certificates of completion, official DD214 forms and/or official AARTS or SMART transcripts should be sent to the evaluations office for the assessment of military course work that may be credited toward a college degree.

Portfolio Evaluation
Students may use the portfolio method of evaluation to have their knowledge of a certain course or academic area evaluated.  This request for credit must fulfill an elective or course requirement in a student's degree program.  Each portfolio consists of an essay explaining how the student acquired this knowledge and how it relates to course objectives.  NYIT does require documentation of such learning, which may be in the form of work samples, detailed job descriptions or licenses.  A nonrefundable evaluation fee is charged for each portfolio.  A Prior Learning Evaluation Guide containing more detailed information may be obtained from the Office of Prior Learning.
