The fourth year design studios, Design V and VI, will consist of two separate semester long projects. Design V, a Community Design Studio, runs as a competition of ideas among teams of students. The aim of this studio is to introduce students of architecture to broad planning and urban design strategies, and to issues concerning environmental sustainability, demonstrable at a human scale. At the same time, Design V offers collective efforts to communities and public planning agencies, who seek bold ideas and creative vision. This studio will introduce to a design process where site and program are not a given, but are treated as principal variables of the design thinking. Working in multiple scales and time frames, will be an integral part of this investigation to develop proposals that following a critical understanding of the existing conditions, offer a vision for a resilient future of the whole urban environment, envisioning architecture as a transformative agent.
