OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (May 14, 2012) - After each week of competition, three NYIT student-athletes will be selected as members of the Bears of the Week list. Weekly selections are chosen from scheduled games starting from each Friday to the following Thursday. Nominations will take into account notable statistics, weekly awards received and/or personal accomplishments achieved both on and off the playing fields. Coaches who reach career milestones will also be considered for this honor. This week's recipients are Billy McGee (Rocky Point, N.Y.) and Jason Smith (Setauket, N.Y.) of men’s lacrosse, and Michael Fermin (Astoria, N.Y.) of baseball.

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (May 8, 2012) - Head Athletic Trainer Dean Kamvakis, ATC, was recognized by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association last month to commemorate his 25 years of membership with the association. Kamvakis was sent a pin from the NATA. Kamvakis began his career in athletic training while working on his undergraduate degree at St. Lawrence University. He became a student trainer under the supervision of SLU Head Athletic Trainer Ron Waske, the trainer for the New York Islanders when they won several Stanley Cup titles during the 1980s. After graduating, Kamvakis served as a graduate assistant at Ithaca College for two years, and earned a master’s degree in physical education. He then accepted a position at Onondaga Sports Medicine Clinic in Syracuse, N.Y. In 1993, Kamvakis joined the staff at NYIT as the Head Athletic Trainer.

This week's recipients are head tennis coach Chris Frusci, Dustin Wenchel (Ladenburg, Germany) and Julian Marcon (Nandrin, Belgium) of men’s tennis, and Michael Fermin (Astoria, N.Y.) of baseball.
