Great West honors seven Bear’s in inaugural All-Academic Team

Naperville Ill. (June 14, 2009) – Seniors Denten Neil (Wakefield, Quebec), Jon Eichhorn (Sayville, N.Y), Matthew Doran (South Ozone Park, N.Y), and Chris Colleran (Woodside, N.Y.), juniors Greg Gillroy (Nesconset, N.Y.), and Brian Smith (Nesconset, N.Y.) and sophomore Preston Wasmund (Ajax, Ontario) of NYIT’s baseball team all garnered Great West Conference All-Academic Team honors as announced by the conference office today.

Selection to the team requires that the student-athlete achieve a minimum cumulative 3.2 grade point average and have participated in at least 50% of the contests. Student-athletes were selected based on their most recent GPA. Team captain Denten Neill, who majors in engineering management, batted .301 and led the team with 50 runs scored and 14 doubles. Doran, a business administration major, appeared in 14 games on the mound, leading all relievers with 26 strike outs. Eichhorn, an electronics and information security major made 10 appearances on the mound with two starts. Colleran, who majors in physical therapy, appeared in 18 games, and was third in the team with a 6.26 ERA. Gillroy, a mathematics education major, played in 38 games with 34 starts behind the plate. Smith, a business administration major, started all 49 games, finishing the season second on the team with seven homeruns, 10 doubles, 75 hits, 30 RBI, and 47 runs scored. Wasmund, an accounting major, made nine starts on the mound, finishing second on the team with a 5.88 ERA, 49 innings pitched, and one complete game.
