Duane Bailey Tapped as NYIT's New Athletics Director

May 4, 2015

Following a national search, New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) today announced the appointment of Duane Bailey as its new director of intercollegiate athletics and recreation, effective June 1. Bailey joins NYIT from Seton Hall University, where he served as the deputy director of athletics for the past seven years. He will report to Patrick G. Love, Ph.D., NYIT’s vice president for student affairs.

In this role, Bailey will be tasked with sustaining an environment in which student-athletes are best positioned to experience outstanding educational and collegiate athletics careers. Specific areas of responsibility include recruiting, hiring, training, supervising, and assessing student-centered coaches, and building and maintaining a culture of passion, pride, and performance.

"We are very excited to have Duane join us at NYIT," Love said. "His leadership, experience, and accomplishments will help him guide an already strong unit to the next level." He further noted that Bailey’s intercollegiate and organizational experience will enable NYIT to optimize opportunities to recruit student-athletes; to enhance engagement between the Department of Athletics and the broader community, especially in terms of recreational athletics; and to market NYIT’s various programs to alumni as well as to current and prospective students.

NYIT is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the East Coast Conference (ECC). As an NCAA Division II member, NYIT competes in men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and men's lacrosse. The baseball team operates under the auspices of NCAA Division I. Recent successes include NYIT men’s soccer participating in its sixth NCAA Tournament last November and the men's tennis team winning its third consecutive ECC Championship last month.

As Seton Hall's deputy director of athletics, Bailey oversaw all internal operations of the athletics department and several sports. Prior to that, he served as associate commissioner and chief financial officer of the Atlantic 10 Conference. Additionally, he has served as an adjunct professor of sports management at Adelphi University and held leadership positions in finance, public relations, and marketing with the United States Tennis Association, the New York Mets, Cablevision Systems Corporation, and CA Technologies.

He began his professional career in the National Football League, spending 10 years working first for the league's management council and later for the Kansas City Chiefs, managing the team’s salary cap and contract negotiations.

"I am both thrilled and humbled to join the NYIT family as its director of athletics," said Bailey. "This is something I've been working toward my entire career. Success begins with great people, and I look forward to working with NYIT’s talented student-athletes, coaches, and staff, and to continue pushing the department to strive for excellence. It's a dream come true both personally and professionally, and I look forward to the tremendous opportunities that lie ahead."

A graduate of St. John's University with a degree in finance, Bailey also received a master's degree in athletic administration from Adelphi University, and an M.B.A. in management and administration from Long Island University, Post campus.
