Oh, The Places You’ll Go!

September 23, 2016

It’s never too early to start planning to study abroad. Computer science student Preethi Vemula knows that well. Although she just began her first semester, she, along with other NYIT-Manhattan students, was exploring her options at NYIT’s annual Study Abroad Fair. “I want to see what places I can go to,” said Vemula, who is originally from India.

At the fair, graduate and undergraduate students learned how they can incorporate travel experiences into their higher education experience and investigated various short- and long-term study abroad options. “I always suggest beginning the process early,” says Julie Fratrik, Director of Global Academic Programs. Jonell Joseph would agree. After months of effort, supported by her NYIT mentors, the marketing student was finally awarded a 2016 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. She and eight other forward-thinking New York students are now spending the fall semester at NYIT-Nanjing.

One of the most convenient options is studying for a semester at an NYIT campus in Nanjing, Beijing, Vancouver, or Abu Dhabi, as Joseph is doing. For many students, a semester in one of these places keeps them on track to graduation without the need to transfer credits, since NYIT’s curriculum is seamless across all campuses.

In addition to NYIT campuses and NYIT partner programs in Europe and other countries, students have the option of earning university credit through semester-abroad programs hosted by external organizations such as CIS Abroad and American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS).

For students looking for a shorter study abroad experience, NYIT offers a number of opportunities, including Alternative Spring Break, school and college-sponsored trips, and service-oriented missions, like those offered through the Center for Global Health. NYIT also offers Global Exchange Scholarships that are open to students who can earn credit for their study abroad. Plus, many students have been awarded Presidential Global Fellowships for international travel.

Computer science major and senior Brayden Sorenson (from Kaysville, Utah), who volunteered at the Study Abroad Fair, recently completed a semester abroad with NYIT partner IT University of Copenhagen, in Denmark’s capital. He said, “I moved across the country to come to NYIT, and I wanted to keep learning about other places. The world is huge, and there are many different ways of doing things.”
