Social Media User's Guide for February

February 8, 2016

No editorial calendar is complete without a list of both real and obscure holidays and celebrations. These occasions offer a fun way to connect with your audience on social media channels. February's list includes cultural, presidential, and scholarly (read: geek chic) milestones. And remember: February is Black History Month.

  • Monday, Feb. 8: Chinese New Year
  • Tuesday, Feb. 9: Mardi Gras/Fat Tuesday
  • Wednesday, Feb. 10: Ash Wednesday
  • Thursday, Feb. 11: National Inventors' Day
  • Friday, Feb. 12: Abraham Lincoln's and Charles Darwin's posthumous birthdays
  • Sunday, Feb. 14: Valentine's Day
  • Monday, Feb. 15: President's Day
  • Monday, Feb. 22: George Washington's posthumous birthday and World Thinking Day
  • Monday, Feb. 22 to Friday, Feb. 26: Fair Use Week
  • Saturday, Feb. 27: John Steinbeck's posthumous birthday
  • Sunday, Feb. 28: The Oscars/88th Academy Awards
  • Monday, Feb. 29: Leap Day

Choose your holidays and celebrations wisely and make sure to tie your posts back to actual content or at least find a clever way to connect the subjects to things relevant to NYIT. Keep an eye out for fun days that just pop up on Twitter or other networks.

TIP: In addition to these ideas, I suggest asking professors about any important dates relevant to their fields and specific expertise. They may be able to "guest comment" on these happenings via your social posts.

For more examples, follow NYIT on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
