All NYIT students receive coverage for medical expenses incurred as a result of accidental bodily injury under the college's Plan 1 Basic Accident Medical Expense Benefit through Aetna Student Health. The cost of the accident policy is automatically charged to your account with the Office of the Bursar each semester. Full-time students are covered 24 hours a day, worldwide. Part-time students are covered only while on any NYIT campus, or while participating in an activity sponsored by NYIT. The insurance is effective the first day of the semester. You will receive an Aetna insurance card during the first 45 days of the semester to be used for accident claims only. If you need to file a claim prior to receiving a card, contact the Office of Wellness Services.
In addition, NYIT offers the Plan 2 Basic Sickness Medical Expense Benefit and Supplemental Accident and Sickness Medical Expense Benefit through Aetna Student Health. NYIT requires that all students living in residence halls and all International students holding an F-1/J-1 visa carry this insurance policy. The cost of the health insurance policy is automatically charged to your account each semester. The insurance is effective the first day of the semester. Plan 2 coverage is voluntary for domestic commuter, full-time and part-time students. Students should access the insurance Web site at AetnaStudentHealth.com to obtain a full explanation of benefits, cost, enrollment, medical claims forms, and deadlines for enrollment. Please also see the "Help Center" section. You will receive an Aetna insurance card during the first 45 days of the semester to be used for filing sickness claims. If you need to use your benefits prior to receiving a card, contact the Office of Wellness Services.
Domestic residential students have the option to waive out of the Plan 2 policy if they are able to show acceptable proof of other comparable insurance coverage. In order to be waived you must complete an online waiver application at the Aetna website using your NYIT identification number. For the fall semester the waiver application will be accessible online on August 1 and for the spring semester on January 2. The waiver deadline will be the same as the posted enrollment deadline available at AetnaStudentHealth.com. All waivers must be completed during the Fall semester unless you take a new residence hall assignment for the first time during a Spring semester. The waiver will be valid through August 31 of the following year. If you waive out of the Plan 2 policy you will still be charged and enrolled in the Plan 1 policy. If you have paid for Plan 2, a credit or refund will be issued in accordance with your Bursar account status.
