NYIT’s Student Government Association (SGA) is the official voice of the student body. The SGA advocates on behalf of student interests—academic, cultural, and social. It is charged with working with the college’s faculty and administration to improve every facet of campus life.
There are two main branches of the SGA—an executive board and a legislative senate. Student representatives from a variety of disciplines are elected annually. Want to know more? Check out the SGA constitution (downloadable PDF).
In addition to acting as a liaison with NYIT’s administration, the SGA oversees the budgeting process for all recognized student clubs and organizations and supports a variety of campus-wide events.
If you have questions, concerns, or want to get involved in campus life at NYIT, the SGA is here for you. For more information, e-mail the Manhattan campus SGA.
SGA President's Welcome Letter
Dear class of 2013:
On behalf of the Manhattan Student Government Association, I would like to congratulate you on your admission to NYIT, and welcome you to our Manhattan campus. We hope that your time here will be an exciting experience and a life time opportunity.
New York Institute of Technology provides great opportunities for getting involved in on campus activities. We currently have fifteen clubs, and seven recreational sports teams. We also have two Greek chapters, TAU KAPPA EPSILON and ALPHA SIGMA TAU. Our SGA provides a voice for the students. We try to respond to issues and concerns of the student body.
As a first year student, you can get involved within the SGA as a Junior Senator. You will learn the responsibilities of being a Senator through one of our current senators, who will walk you through the process. This partnership will prepare you to take on the role of Senator or Executive Officer during your sophomore year and help you develop your leadership skills.
Here are three things you should know before you start your college experience. First, seek to discover the true meaning of Francis Bacon's quote, "knowledge is power," by asking questions to the faculty and utilizing the variety of resources that are available to you. Second, develop your character by interacting with different groups and participating in clubs. Lastly, stay balanced and focused! As Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, "Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education." Remember that through the years to come, you will not only be investing money for your education but also time, take advantage of the opportunities before you!
Best,
Antirson R. Ortiz
