“SOAR Toward Excellence”
2012 New Student Orientation

Congratulations and welcome to New York Institute of Technology (NYIT). We are delighted that you have decided to become a part of NYIT. Student Orientation is a mandatory program and it is designed to smooth your transition to the university.

During Orientation, you will have the chance to make new friends, explore the campus and its resources and get all of your questions answered. You’ll come out of Orientation headed in the right direction for classes this fall.

Getting Involved

Getting Involved 50 Days / 50 Nights
Your first semester kicks off with 50 days and 50 nights of fun events for all of our students. We'll have a great lineup of activities from bingo nights to Broadway shows hosted by the Office of Campus Life and Student Government Association. Check the events calendar in August.

Student Activities and Leadership Development
There's much more to college life than studying and going to class. You can learn from every experience, and we encourage you to take advantage of all that NYIT has to offer: clubs, organizations, sports, and on- and off-campus event. Students and staff embrace diversity, and encourage leadership development and the free expression of ideas. We're dedicated to empowering our students and engaging them in a global community.

NYIT Resources

Student Resources We have a number of valuable resources available to NYIT students right on campus.

Residential Life

Residential Life Students who plan to take courses at either campus are encouraged and invited to live in the residence halls located just around the corner from the NYIT campuses.

First Year Experience Mentor Program

First Year Experience Your first year of college is an exciting time of experience full of new people, schedules, locations, opportunities, a whole new way of life. Sometimes you’ll want a friendly face to help you find your way. NYIT’s First Year Experience (FYE) connects every student with an FYE mentor who serves as a resource and guide on all things NYIT. They know the ropes and will help you get settled and get help when you need it. FYE mentors also plan activities during the semester that are academic, social, and help the community.

Summer Reading Program

Yes, summer reading will give you some homework this summer, but we think you'll really enjoy it! All students will read the same book and interact with one another in rich discussions about the issues in the book. The goal of summer reading is to engage students early in their college experience to build and enhance a sense community among students, faculty, and staff. The Summer Read is, Choosing Civility - The Twenty-five Rules of Considerate Conduct by P.M. Forni.

Transition to College

Getting Involved Coming to college can sometimes be a difficult transition - new schedule, new friends, more responsibility, and maybe even a new place to live. With all the changes there is bound to be more stress.
Are you sleeping enough? Eating enough? Staying out too late? Finding enough time to get all your work done and have a social life? Are you feeling lonely? Stressed out? Sad? We are here to help.
Counseling services are confidential and free for all enrolled students. We have offices on both campuses staffed with licensed professional counselors. You are always welcome to stop by. More information and a full description of services can be found here or by calling Manhattan at 212.261.1770 or Old Westbury at 516.686.7976.
