  • Online career search tools include:
    • FOCUS Online: (enter access code NYIT) Use this online assessment and occupational exploration tool if you are considering a career change or interested in exploring other areas in your field. *This is the new version of Focus. If you already have a Focus account, you will need to create a new account and then choose the option to import your data to the new system.
    •  O*NET, developed and maintained by the U.S. Department of Labor, features constantly updated information for more than 1,000 job titles. It lists characteristics necessary for specific career areas related to interests, work values, and abilities as well as a list of knowledge and skills (i.e. critical thinking, writing, etc.) needed for specific jobs. All you need to do is click on "What It Takes."  
       
    • CareerSearch: A research database of more than 4 million employers worldwide (including contact information, Web sites, maps, competitors), searchable by industry, location, and key words. You can create an account using NYIT's referral ID: NYIT1955
    •  Uniworld: Two multinational business directories that allow you to search for U.S. firms operating in foreign countries and foreign firms operating in the U.S. Contact information contains headquarters, branches, subsidiaries, and affiliates.

    • imageCareer Insider: Exclusive online access to more than 3,500 employer profiles and rankings related to NYIT academic majors, including energy, green careers, media and entertainment, health care, marketing, and technology. Includes discussion boards and career guidebooks.

    • Professional Associations: organized by field of study to assist you in your career research.

  • Salary information (Note: when researching salary data online, remember that not all sources are based on independent scientific research. Use these tools as a starting point, and cross-reference salaries from several sources):  
    • Career One Stop: follow the links for "salary + benefits" and "salary info."
    • Salary.com: the salary wizard allows you to choose a job category and ZIP code to view low, medium, and high salaries in a particular geographic area.
    • New York Job Source: average salaries reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics for the New York metropolitan area.
    • Job Star Central: includes salary surveys, a salary IQ quiz, and negotiation strategies.
