Center for Energy, Environment, and Economics

The purpose of New York Institute of Technology's Center for Energy, Environment, and Economics is to conduct research, evaluate policy options, and advance environmentally friendly technology in the areas of energy generation, air pollution, water resources, solid waste management, and transportation. To do so, center personnel carry out studies, perform experiments, and realize analyses for both the public and private sectors.

One of the goals of the center is dissemination of the results of its efforts.  Therefore, and in addition to traditional reporting, it engages in and promote public education of the issues and, from time to time, holds major conferences .

Finally, and in concert with the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences, the center serves as a demonstration site for new, energy-efficient, alternative, renewable resource technologies.  These demonstrations are open to the public, to the governmental sector, and to the corporate world so that they all might avail themselves of new and useful systems.

Recent Projects

  • Design, development of a unique and patented parallel transmission system for a hybrid electric car; New York Institute of Technology vehicles have been proven to operate with both gasoline and compressed natural gas
  • Preliminary feasibility assessment for the installation of a distributed wind farm for a local community including the development of the means and economics to distribute the electricity
  • Analysis and assessment of compressed natural gas dispersion in enclosed spaces for a regional transit authority
  • Redesign and systems safety for the introduction of compressed natural gas vehicle use in a local transit company; evaluation of vehicle performance and staff training was included in this effort
  • System simulations for automobiles to assist in the evaluation of advanced transportation technologies
  • Evaluation and comparison of the environmental effects of solid waste combustion and recycling;
  • Water pollution modeling techniques and software evaluation
  • Evaluation and implementation of geographical information systems as a tool for real time environmental project analysis
  • Development of tools for evaluation of the effectiveness of photovoltaic systems

Corporate Affiliate Membership

  • Center to assign a faculty member as a liaison to the corporation for assistance regarding consulting, R&D projects, internships, etc.
  • Center to provide the corporation with assistance in recruiting graduates and interns.
  • Center to provide access to relevant research reports and seminars including pre-publication drafts.
