Biography

John Handrakis, P.T., D.P.T., Ed.D., was an adjunct professor for six years before joining NYIT's faculty full-time in 2005. He was recently recognized with the Distinguished Teaching Award from NYIT's School of Health Professions.

Since then, he has been actively involved in the admissions committee, faculty meetings, course planning, and student remediation and advisement.

Handrakis also serves as a part-time health science specialist for the Center of Excellence for the Medical Consequences of Spinal Cord Injury at James J. Peters Bronx VA Medical Center. There, he is a member of the institutional review board, as well as a research collaborator in the area of cardio-autonomics and spinal cord injury.

Handrakis has more than 15 years of experience delivering patient care to an orthopedic and sports medicine population in an outpatient setting. He also worked in rehabilitation, outpatient, acute care, and chest physical settings at NYU Langone Medical Center.

He is a member of many professional organizations and recently became a peer reviewer for the International Journal of Sports Medicine. He received his doctor of physical therapy degree from NYIT, and his Ed.D. in applied physiology from Teachers College, Columbia University. He received his master's degree in exercise physiology from Long Island University, certificate in physical therapy from Columbia University, and bachelor's degree in general science from Fordham University.
