Biography
Karen Friel, P.T., D.H.S., joined NYIT in 1998, and six years later became the chairperson of the Department of Physical Therapy.
Friel has initiated many partnerships at NYIT, including the Brazil-based Transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy program and the post professional master's degree in physical therapy program in Amman, Jordan.
She is currently researching factors related to low back pain in the college-aged population, as well as the incidence of injury in the female high school lacrosse player.
In addition to teaching, Friel is a physical therapy consultant and participant at the International Prosthetics and Orthotics "Amputee Walking School." She has previously provided services at hospitals and facilities in New York.
She is the chairperson of various committees in the New York chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association. She earned her doctor of health science degree and master's degree in sports physical therapy at the University of Indianapolis. She received her bachelor's degree in physical therapy from Stony Brook University, and bachelor's degree in psychology from Emery University.
