NYIT’s Counseling Services offer short-term counseling to NYIT students who may be experiencing personal, social, or academic concerns. Licensed professional counselors assist students in developing greater self-understanding as well as strategies for effective problem solving to enhance personal development and academic success. Individual and group sessions are available for students to discuss any personal concern that may be affecting them and/or distracting them from their studies.
The Centers provide a holistic approach to wellness education, offering workshops and other health promotion events throughout the year. Our staff at the Old Westbury and Manhattan campuses are available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.. Contact the Counseling and Wellness Center at your campus for extended evening hours. Outside referrals are provided in instances requiring more specialized services, such as HIV testing, emergency housing, or for long term psychotherapy.
This Web site has been designed to give you some basic information regarding counseling services and answer some questions you may have. Please keep in mind that while the written word can be educational, there is no substitute for face-to-face dialogue. We welcome you to visit a campus counseling center and meet us in person to discuss whatever is on your mind. E-mail Disclaimer: We cannot do personal counseling through e-mail. If you want to receive counseling, call or visit our offices to make an appointment with a counselor. We thank you for your understanding.
All counseling services are free of charge, including individual and group sessions, crisis intervention, resource and referral information, workshops, and lectures. Students may be referred to off-campus services for specific therapeutic needs. The Counseling and Wellness Centers abide by strict professional ethics and laws protecting confidential information. Your confidentiality is protected within the boundaries of the client/counselor relationship. Certain limitations to confidentiality do exist if a counselor has a reason to believe that there is imminent danger to you or to others. These exceptions are extremely rare. All policies related to confidentiality are discussed with you at the time of your first appointment.
