Gary S. Lynch (B.S. '93)

Current Position
Gary serves as managing director and global leader of the supply chain risk management practice in the New York City offices of Marsh, one of the world’s top insurance brokers and risk advisors. He also leads the company’s Global Pandemic Emergency Response Center and serves as an advisory board member for NYIT’s Center for Risk Management.

"The opportunity to make a difference at an organizational, national, regional, or global level. I also enjoy working with a diverse client base."

Accomplishments
Gary has earned several awards, including a U.S. Secret Service commendation and the Nassau County (N.Y.) Fire Service Silver Medal of Valor. He has also appeared on NBC Nightly News, CNBC, ABC, Bloomberg TV, and the Discovery Channel and written articles for the Wall Street Journal. His career includes executive risk leadership positions at JP Morgan Chase, Prudential, Lockheed Martin, Uniroyal, and the Gartner Group. In addition, Gary is the author of two books on risk management and was a contributor to the World Economic Forum’s 2007 and 2008 Global Risk Report.

Myth Buster
Says Gary: "Believing that risk can be predicted, interdependencies can be understood, and that there is order when it comes to managing external events are some of the biggest fallacies about risk management."

Ain’t No Mountain High Enough…
Gary thrives on tackling assignments that are perceived as insurmountable—or as he puts it, the "cannot do" challenge. His passion, combined with defining clear objectives and respecting different points of view, is what he uses to inspire those around him.

Favorite NYIT Memory
"Attending the Manhattan campus and working with a diverse base of international students helped me gain perspective." Gary chose NYIT because of its overall value, which included flexible class schedules, management programs, tuition, and location.

Definition of Success
"Doing what you really want to do. I have a high level of satisfaction in all aspects of my life."

Favorite Movies
Wall Street and Outbreak. "It goes without saying that I’m a big fan of disaster movies, especially when the outcome is positive and the audience collectively learns from the experience."

Last Book Read
The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable by Nassim Nicholas Taleb

Risk-Free Lifestyle
Gary volunteers for his local fire department, serves as a mentor to younger professionals, and enjoys bicycling, playing guitar, and travel. He is also the father of four children.
