In their inaugural year of competition, the Radical Robotix team from Rocky Point has won the coveted First Place Award in the FIRST ® LEGO® League (FLL) Qualifiers Tournament on Sunday March 3, 2013 at Central Islip High School.
The team demonstrated creativity, ingenuity, team spirit, and professionalism during the robotics competition and particularly in tackling the special challenge of the event—Senior Solutions—with earnest and tenacity.
These young minds had developed the concept of a so-called “Mediwatch” which, as key feature, monitors and reminds that medications need to be taken but also notifies the doctor that prescriptions need to be refilled. Additionally, the Mediwatch would aid in the assessment of certain vital signs and even call for emergency assistance if necessary. Becoming Long Island Champion earned the team an invitation to the FIRST® World Championship on April 24-27, 2013 at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri.
The team is supported, in part, by NYIT - Vice President’s Office as well as the School of Engineering & Computing Sciences and will proudly display the NYIT logo during the upcoming World Championship. Radical Robotix consists of eight Middle School students grades 6 and 7, two teachers and parents including Assistant Professor Joerg R. Leheste/Department of Biomedical Sciences of NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine who is very proud of his son Paul!
