NYIT Elects New Members To Board Of Trustees
NYIT ELECTS NEW MEMBERS TO BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Old Westbury, NY, November 15, 2004… New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) announced the election of two alumni to its Board of Trustees: Deborah Verderame Marciano ’83 of Upper Brookville, and Eli Wachtel ’73 of Scarsdale. The new trustees have proven track records in the business community, Marciano as head of an award-winning architecture firm, and Wachtel as a member of the board of directors and senior managing director of the global investment banking and securities brokerage firm Bear, Stearns & Co. Inc.
“Deborah and Eli bring to NYIT energy, enthusiasm and a clear understanding and passion for our mission,” said Linda Davila, chair of the NYIT Board of Trustees. “Both have remained actively connected to the college since graduating, and their continuing contributions will strengthen our commitment to academic excellence.”
“As community and business leaders, Eli and Deborah bring a wealth of knowledge to the board,” said NYIT President Edward Guiliano. “I know they will put the same skills used so successfully to manage their own companies into their efforts to help shape the future of NYIT.”
Marciano, who earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture at NYIT in 1983, is managing partner of Landy Verderame Arianna Architects, Manhattan, NY, an award-winning, full-service architectural and interior design firm. Under Ms. Marciano’s leadership, her firm tripled in size and revenues, and won the 2003 AIA Award for New Building Interior and Site Design, and the 2002 Chairman’s Award from the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce. She is a charter member and former president of NYIT’s Architectural Alumni Committee.
“NYIT is truly in my blood,” said Marciano. “I’m thrilled to join the board at this exciting time in the college’s history, as we build upon past accomplishments and focus on new programs and initiatives to insure our future success.”
Wachtel, a 1973 graduate of NYIT with a bachelor’s degree in accounting, serves as a member of board of directors of Bear Stearns, one of the largest investment firms in the world. He joined Bear Stearns in 1983 and through a series of promotions rose through the ranks. In his current role as senior managing director, Wachtel is responsible for the firm’s Strategic Structuring and Transactions Department, as well as the trading areas of the International Equities Sales and Trading Department. A strong believer in supporting nonprofit organizations, Wachtel and his wife in 1994 established the Eli and Arlene Charitable Foundation to provide aid to social services, hospitals and overseas organizations.
“NYIT provided wonderful opportunities that have been instrumental in my personal and professional success,” said Wachtel. “I’m proud to be part of this dynamic, evolving institution.”
Wachtel’s father and brother are also NYIT graduates.
