Old Westbury, N.Y., Nov. 4, 2005: New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) today announced the appointment of John Eckert to administrative officer at the college’s Jordan, Bahrain and Abu Dhabi campuses. Eckert’s responsibilities include supervising the day-to-day operations of the finance, human resources, information technology, registrar and admissions departments on each campus. In addition, he will serve as the school’s main point of contact in the Middle East for campus administration in New York.
Eckert joins NYIT from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Doha, Qatar, where he served as associate dean for administration. He was responsible for overseeing the direct administrative functions of various campus departments, including personnel, facilities, information technology, finance, budget, payroll, transportation and safety and security.
Prior to joining VCU in 2002, Eckert was consultant project manager of the R.L. Moore Project at the Educational Advancement Foundation in Austin, Texas. In addition, Eckert has held positions as executive director for finance and administration at Adams and Associates, Inc. in Columbia, Md.; served as dean for administration at Ross University School of Medicine, Commonwealth of Dominica; director of finance and administration at Higher Colleges of Technology in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; and chief operations officer at Ames Laboratory at Iowa State University.
He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1966 with a bachelor’s degree in general engineering. He also earned three master’s degrees: a Master of Science in mechanical engineering from Michigan State University, a Master of Business Administration from the University of Utah, and a Master of Science in business administrative sciences from Iowa State University.
Eckert served on active duty in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1977 during which he was awarded two Purple Hearts, a Silver Star, three Bronze Stars and two air medals. He completed 28 years of military service as a reservist in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
