NYIT Announces New Global Partnerships

Old Westbury, N.Y., Aug. 15, 2006: New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) has signed agreements with Uiduk University in Kyungju, South Korea, and Sangmyung University in Seoul, South Korea, to expand its role as a global institution of higher learning. NYIT’s strategic plan calls for short- and long-term goals that include expanding the college’s international programs to all corners of the world.

Edward Guiliano, Ph.D., president of NYIT, recently welcomed Dr. Jae Sook Han, president of Uiduk University, and members of her administrative staff to the college’s Old Westbury, N.Y., and Manhattan campuses. During the visit, President Guiliano and Han signed a memorandum of understanding that will provide Uiduk undergraduate students an opportunity to study and experience collegiate life at NYIT’s New York campuses. When fully implemented, the “7+1” program (seven semesters at Uiduk and one semester at NYIT) will bring dozens of students to NYIT each year. The program is scheduled to begin this fall.

The two schools are also working on a “2+2” program (two years at each school) for the 2007 academic year. Under this potential agreement, students would have the opportunity to transfer to NYIT following two years of study at Uiduk. After successful completion of their academic programs, Uiduk students would be eligible to receive an NYIT degree. Uiduk University has received top rankings for its high-tech disciplines and has been recognized for its professional and applications-oriented curriculum.

Dr. Harold Oh, NYIT dean of university advancement, and Dr. David Decker, NYIT vice president for global academic programs, also welcomed Dr. Myoungduck Seo, president of Sangmyung University, to sign a memorandum of understanding to explore opportunities for student and faculty exchange programs, collaborative research activities and dual degree academic programs. Sangmyung University, which is comprised of 11 colleges and five graduate schools, has been a recognized leader in South Korean higher education since it was founded in 1937.
