NYIT Hosts Congressman Peter King as Keynote Speaker for Homeland Security Lecture

Old Westbury, N.Y., Dec. 5, 2006: New York Institute of Technology’s (NYIT) Center for Security and Disaster Response, in partnership with Contingency Planning Exchange, will host Homeland Security: Safety, Immigration and Port Security on Friday, Dec. 8, 2006 from 8 a.m. to noon on NYIT’s Old Westbury, N.Y., campus. Congressman Peter King, chairman of the U.S. Committee on Homeland Security, will be the keynote speaker and will discuss how local, state and federal initiatives impact the business community. He will also cover major issues in immigration and port security.

Legislative leaders – including Tim Driscoll, Nassau County deputy executive of public safety; Kevin Law, Suffolk County chief deputy executive; and Mark White, deputy chief, Suffolk County Homeland Security Anti-Terrorism Unit – will share their insights on issues of federal homeland security and safety and how they affect Long Island.

The homeland security lecture will take place at Kenneth Riland Auditorium on NYIT’s Old Westbury, N.Y., campus, located at Northern Boulevard, one mile east of Glen Cove Road. For more information, contact Edward Maggio, J.D., Esq., NYIT’s assistant professor of criminal justice and director of NYIT's Center for Security and Disaster Response, at 516.686.3870 or emaggio@nyit.edu. Please bring photo ID. Admission is free.

One of the highlights will be the demonstration of technology that allows first responders to stay in communication during emergencies and provides information in real time. On display will be emergency vehicles and tactical applications, including the Tandberg satellite truck, which provides emergency response functions as well as educational and instructional support to companies, government agencies and schools. The truck works by connecting to a satellite and providing high speed Internet access, which the user can utilize to video-conference, establish wireless Internet (the truck has wireless routers) or do voice over IP telephony.

NYIT’s Center for Security and Disaster Response provides formal training in the areas of security and emergency response, counter-terrorism and espionage, as well as raise public awareness about key security and emergency management issues. The center’s goal is to foster and sponsor projects and conferences – benefiting corporations, government agencies and the public – that lead to the development of advanced policies for enhancing the field of private security, information and data protection, emergency and public health issues, and engineering and technology.
