Fifty-Nine NYIT Student Athletes Score Distinctions
Old Westbury, N.Y., July 20, 2006: New York Institute of Technology’s (NYIT) Department of Athletics has named 59 student athletes, including five who received a 4.0 grade point average (GPA), to its spring 2006 Athletics Director Honor Roll. Those who earned a perfect GPA are:
· Clement Campbell (men’s cross country) of Clarendon, Jamaica, a graduate student studying environmental technology;
· Julian Richards (baseball) of Ontario, Canada, a sophomore studying business administration;
· Nick Shwaery (men’s basketball) of Springfield, Va., who graduated with a master’s degree in communication arts;
· Nicole Swistun (softball) of East Islip, N.Y., a graduate student studying physical therapy at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine of NYIT; and
· David Velasco (men’s soccer) of Puebla, Mexico, a graduate student studying communication arts.
NYIT student athletes scored honor roll distinctions earning a GPA of 3.2 or better during the spring 2006 semester. They will be honored this fall for their academic achievements at a special ceremony. A total of 41 student athletes received a GPA of 3.5 or higher. The 59 student athletes named to the college’s Athletics Director Honor Roll represent all of NYIT’s 10 intercollegiate athletics programs, which include men’s soccer (12); women’s soccer (8); baseball (7); men’s cross country (7); women’s basketball (5); softball (6); lacrosse (6); women’s volleyball (4); men’s basketball (3); and women’s cross country (1).
“Given the nature and pressure of intercollegiate competition, it is a blessing to have student athletes who continue to work extremely hard to establish a solid academic foundation while pursuing athletic accomplishments,” says Clyde Doughty Jr., NYIT’s director of athletics and recreation. “Each of these student athletes has shown a propensity for academic excellence and social enhancement.”
NYIT’s Athletics Director Honor Roll is a byproduct of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) Challenging Athletes Minds for Personal Success (CHAMPS)/Life Skills program. The program was launched in 1994 in an effort to offer support services to foster the development of student athletes. In addition, it promotes academic, athletic, personal and social responsibilities, as well as helps build positive self-esteem and encourages the development of leadership skills.
