NYIT Presents ‘New York City: Global Village’

Old Westbury, N.Y., Feb. 7, 2007: New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), a leader in global education, will host its third annual interdisciplinary academic conference, New York City: Global Village on Friday, March 9, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at NYIT’s New Technology Building, 16 W. 61st St., 11th floor, Manhattan campus. The conference will address the role of New York City as a global hub and a site of international exchange in culture, technology, finance, tourism and other fields.

“Guests will have the opportunity to hear from leading scholars on New York City’s work, culture, tourism, politics and redevelopment from a global perspective,” says Conference Chair Nicholas Bloom, Ph.D., NYIT assistant professor of social science and chair of interdisciplinary studies at the college’s Manhattan campus.

Saskia Sassen, Ph.D., Ralph Lewis professor of sociology at the University of Chicago and centennial visiting professor at the London School of Economics, will deliver the keynote address. Sassen, a leading theorist of globalization and its impact on cities, will assess New York City’s current position among the global cities of the world. She is the author of several books, including The Global City: New York, London, Tokyo; Territory, Authority, Rights: From Medieval to Global Assemblages; and an updated and expanded third edition of Cities in a World Economy. Her books have been translated into 13 languages.

The conference will also feature a multimedia performance of Crossing the BLVD with documentary artists Judith Sloan and Warren Lehrer. Crossing the BLVD is a cross-media project that documents and portrays the largely invisible lives, images, sounds and stories of new immigrants and refugees who live in Queens, N.Y., the most ethnically diverse locality in the United States. To complement the event, a global portraits exhibit will depict daily student academic and social life at NYIT’s Manhattan and global campuses.

Attendees are requested to pre-register. Although admission is free, space is limited. For online registration, general information and program schedule, please visit NYIT’s New York City: Global Village Web site at http://iris.nyit.edu/~tnauheim/nycgv.
