NYIT Prepares Human Resources Professionals for Growing International Marketplace

Old Westbury, N.Y., Jan. 24, 2007: New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), a leader in global education, is one of six colleges nationwide – and the only college in the northeast – chosen to offer a comprehensive preparation course for the Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR) certification exam. Anyone with at least two years of exempt HR experience and responsibility for international HR activities is eligible to take the exam.

NYIT is partnering with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) to offer the SHRM Global Learning System course this spring. The program provides a reference tool for human resources professionals with international and cross-border responsibilities. The program is open to NYIT students and the general public.

“We are beginning to see more employers require professional and global HR training because of businesses’ rapid expansion into overseas markets,” says Richard Dibble, Ph.D., NYIT professor of labor relations and director of the college’s Center for Labor and Industrial Relations. “Businesses are integrating their domestic and overseas operations and need to deploy their employees internationally to manage their global workforces.”

The non-credit, professional development course includes 30 hours of classroom instruction, text books, archived web casts, and a CD-ROM with 700 test questions and interactive case studies. The subject matter is organized into six modules: strategic HR management; global organizational effectiveness and employee development; global staffing; global compensation and benefits; international assignment management; and international employee relations and regulations.

The seven session course will be instructed by global HR consultant and lecturer Lynda Spielman, Ph.D., GPHR, and will be offered at NYIT’s Manhattan campus, located at 1855 Broadway (61st St.), from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays: March 3, 10, 31, April 7, 14, 21, and 28. For more information, course fees or to register, please contact NYIT’s Center for Labor and Industrial Relations at 516.686.7722 or shrm@nyit.edu.

GPHR certification exams began in 2004; the next exam cycle is in May. NYIT offers a graduate degree in human resource management, as well as additional courses to prepare individuals for professional certifications in human resources, treasury, and management accounting.
