NYIT’s Patrons of the Arts Sponsors Free Concerts


Old Westbury, N.Y., Jan. 11, 2007: New York Institute of Technology’s (NYIT) Patrons of the Arts is pleased to announce its spring 2007 cultural arts line up. All performances are free and take place on NYIT’s Old Westbury, N.Y., campus, located at Northern Boulevard, one mile east of Glen Cove Road. Seating is on a first-come basis. Great Sounds of Jazz – Celebrating Black History Month

Shenole Latimer Quartet

“A young jazz star on the rise” and the winner of the Long Island Best Voice/Best Horn Player award in 1999, saxophonist Shenole Latimer’s fiery performances have steadily gained him recognition in the tri-state area.

Sunday, Feb. 25, 3 - 5 p.m. at David G. Salten Hall

Co-sponsored by the Town of Oyster Bay Department of Community and Youth Services Cultural and Performing Arts, Bruce E. Foley, commissioner, and Commerce Bank.

Polezhayev Family Spring Concert

The talented Polezhayev family will perform the most popular genres in music, including waltz and tango. Hear music by Johann Strauss, Frederic Chopin, Johannes Brahms, Astor Piazzolla, and others, specially arranged by Vladimir Polezhayev. Special guests: Anton Polezhayev, violinist virtuoso/former member of the New York Philharmonic, and Simon Polezhayev, double bass soloist.

Island Chamber Symphony

The Island Chamber Symphony, under the baton of music director Jeremy Kempton, will feature two gifted young oboists from the Eastman School of Music in Albinoni’s Concerto for Two Oboes and Orchestra. The orchestra will also perform Mozart’s delightful Symphony No. 38, also known as the Prague symphony.

Intergeneration Day

Phil Costa’s “Something Special Big Band” is featured as part of NYIT’s annual Intergeneration Day, a gathering of students and senior citizens. Phil Costa will lead his renowned band in a lively concert of jazz and wing music that is sure to get listeners of all ages in the mood for dancing. In addition to dancing, there will also be the option to attend a lecture by a prominent NYIT faculty member.

Thursday, April 12, noon - 2 p.m. at Gymnasium/Student Activities Center

Sponsored by the NYIT Patrons of the Arts. Described by cabaret legend Andrea Marcovicci as “a sensational performer whose dedication to the American popular song makes her a must-see,” vocalist Kate Beckman will offer a unique cabaret performance that combines a variety of songs and styles with her own very personal touch.

Great Sounds of Jazz

Agora Quartet

The newly formed Agora Quartet showcases the sounds of world jazz blended with rhythms from the northern regions of Brazil. Clay Ross (guitar), Scott Kettner (drums), Solomon Dorsey (bass), and Nate Shaw (piano) share a multicultural approach to improvised music. Searching for common threads in music from around the globe, they create a sound without borders, inspired by all that is positive in culture and song.
