NYIT Culinary Arts Center Accepting Enrollment for Certificate Programs
Old Westbury, N.Y., July 10, 2007: New York Institute of Technology’s (NYIT) award-winning Culinary Arts Center is accepting students for next fall’s culinary arts and baking and pastry arts certificate programs. Classes begin on Monday, Sept. 10. at the college’s Central Islip, N.Y., site. Those interested in learning more about the certificate programs are invited to attend an open house on Sunday, July 21, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Culinary Arts Center. A special registration session will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 8, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Each certificate program offers practical training in a professional working environment. Through hands-on demonstrations, NYIT’s professional culinary instructors teach students the trade skills necessary for food preparation and service in commercial and institutional settings. Graduates will be qualified to seek employment opportunities at establishments such as restaurants, catering facilities, hotels, hospitals, and private or public institutions.
The 750-hour certificate program in culinary arts provides a foundation in the culinary profession and educates students about current industry issues. The program requires 560 classroom, kitchen, and lab hours, and 190 externship hours. Day and evening classes are available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 6 to 10 p.m. Courses include food science, purchasing and cost control, culinary theory, and catering and event planning.
The 500-hour certificate program in baking and pastry arts is for individuals interested in learning intermediate skills in baking and pastry production. The program requires 350 classroom, kitchen, and lab hours, and 150 externship hours. Day and evening classes are available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 6 to 11 p.m. Weekend classes are available Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Courses include principles of baking and pastry arts, classical desserts, sugar decoration, wedding and special occasion cakes, and frozen desserts.
NYIT alumni and seniors can receive a five percent discount. Dorm space is available if needed. NYIT’s Culinary Arts Center is accredited by the American Culinary Federation Education Institute.
