NYIT President Edward Guiliano Elected Treasurer of cIcu and Chairman of LIRACHE
November 2007—NYIT President Edward Guiliano, Ph.D. has been elected treasurer by the Board of Trustees of the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (cIcu). The commission represents the chief executives of New York’s 100+ independent (private, not-for-profit) colleges and universities on issues of public policy. In his new role, Guiliano joins the cIcu executive committee, which includes Chairman John E. Sexton, president of New York University; Vice Chair Anthony G. Collins, president of Clarkson University; and Philip A. Glotzbach, president of Skidmore University. Guiliano also oversees the cIcu board’s Finance and Administrative Committee.
Member colleges of cIcu compose the largest private sector of higher education in the world and confer most of the bachelor’s degrees (57 percent), master’s degrees (72 percent), and doctoral and first-professional degrees (81 percent) earned in New York State. Its member campuses enroll more than 460,000 students, including 290,000 New York State residents.
Guiliano has also been elected chairman of the Long Island Regional Advisory Council on Higher Education (LIRACHE), a consortium of 19 regional colleges and universities dedicated to improving educational effectiveness through inter-institutional cooperation. As part of its mission, LIRACHE fosters member cooperation on issues such as data collection, library resource sharing, staff interactions, and the creation and dissemination of public relations materials.
Under Guiliano’s leadership, NYIT has been consistently ranked as one of America’s best colleges by several publications. During his presidency, NYIT has significantly increased the size and quality of its student body to more than 15,000 students from all 50 U.S. states and 98 countries; recruited seasoned administrators and distinguished faculty members; and added campuses and sites in North America, South America, the Middle East, Asia, and online to complement NYIT’s hub campuses in Manhattan and Long Island.
Most recently, Guiliano spearheaded the development of a bold 2030 strategic plan, designed to position NYIT over the next 25 years as the model for 21st-century global higher education. He has already overseen a major renovation and construction of campus facilities and has implemented comprehensive branding and marketing programs that have enhanced the college’s national and international reputation.
Guiliano began his NYIT career as an English professor in 1974. In 1988, he was the youngest person in NYIT history to be promoted up the ranks to full professor. Prior to his presidency, he served as vice president for academic affairs and provost. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Brown University and a doctorate from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. In 2001, he received the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor for his personal accomplishments, social compassion, and outstanding contributions to American society.
