Roslyn Savings Foundation Sponsors Creative Contraption Competition at NYIT

Old Westbury, N.Y., Dec. 3: In an effort to encourage and support young women in the field of engineering, Roslyn Savings Foundation is sponsoring a "Creative Contraption Competition" at New York Institute of Technology (NYIT). Five teams have been established, each having at least one young woman participant, and they are charged with programming a robotic device to efficiently and successfully navigate a course and retrieve water.

The competition was designed to replicate the potential course a young woman in an underdeveloped country might have to follow to obtain water for her family and village. The gathering of water is an essential task; however, it precludes many women from completing basic education and pursuing higher educational goals.

Five teams of three students have accepted the challenge and are busy designing their "contraption" and practicing the course. The competition and award ceremony will be held on April 28, 2009 at NYIT. Members of the first-place team will receive $2,000 each; second-place team members will receive $1,000 each, and the third place team will receive $500. For more information about the competition please contact Dan Rapka, drapka@nyit.edu or Angela Delcid, adelcid@nyit.edu.
