Congressman Steve Israel and NYIT Announce Launch of “Green Print” for Campus

Central Islip, N.Y., Jan. 14, 2008 – Congressman Steve Israel (D-Huntington) and NYIT President Edward Guiliano announced today new federal funding for a campus-wide “green print” initiative to determine the carbon footprint of the university, to research energy alternatives and to undertake broad efforts to reduce energy consumption on campus and in the community. “As a global university, NYIT must be an exemplary steward of the environment and set an example in our communities from New York City and Long Island to Nanjing and Abu Dhabi. We thank and applaud Rep. Israel for ensuring the new federal funds that will help us do a better job of leading by example,” said President Guiliano.

The funding will support NYIT in its efforts to develop a campus “green print” that will map out ways to:

Identify its carbon footprint by

• establishing a baseline for greenhouse gas emissions (campus buildings will be metered for electrical use and BTU fuel) consumption.

• measuring BTU per square foot building area.

• calculating emissions generated by purchased electricity, heating from individual building boilers, employee carpooling, and a variety of other means.

Invest in new energy-saving technology including

• major renovations for Central Islip dormitories, construction of solar energy carports to charge plug-in hybrid vehicles, and testing most efficient photovoltaic and battery technologies.

• installation of occupancy sensors for classrooms.

• installation of water saving fixtures such as low-flow toilets and lower flow shower heads.

Develop programs for sustainability such as

• campus-wide paper recycling.

• host additional energy conferences and community outreach.

• recover cooking oil (from NYIT’s Central Islip Epicurean Room restaurant and Old Westbury de Seversky Center) for use as biodiesel fuel.
