NYIT Starts the New Academic Year Greener Than the Year Before

NYIT Launches Bike Share Program on its Old Westbury and Manhattan Campuses

Old Westbury, N.Y. , September 15, 2009: New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) is launching pilot bike share programs on its Old Westbury and Manhattan campuses in conjunction with the start of the academic school year—the first of its kind at any university in the New York metropolitan area.

Thanks to a generous donation, NYIT now has 50-plus bicycles for use by students, faculty, and staff members. Each participant is required to pay a nominal fee, attend an orientation meeting, watch an instructional bike safety video, and sign a waiver. The program's goal is to have an easily accessible, fun, healthy way for the entire NYIT community to participate in support of a greener campus.

"The initiation of this program at NYIT only further enforces our commitment to sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint," says NYIT President Edward Guiliano, who was inspired to create NYIT's program by a bike share offering in Paris. "With our solar carports, hybrid vehicle fleets, and bike share program, among other initiatives, NYIT is proud to be a leader in creating one of the greenest campuses in New York."

The bike share program is a pilot offering on both campuses, and NYIT is committed to growing the program, and purchasing many more bikes throughout the year. Registration began on Monday, Sept. 14.
