Old Westbury, NY – Several NYIT engineering and computer science experts presented research yesterday that could benefit the medical field, in areas ranging from electronic medical records to patient care and safety.

After the presentations, top NYIT leaders said they were excited about research opportunities that advance both disciplines and bring them closer together.

"It tells you that NYIT is intellectually alive—that's the feeling we got today," said Dean Nada Marie Anid of the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences.

"To improve the quality of life, medicine and engineering have to get together," said Barbara Ross-Lee, Vice President for Health Sciences and Medical Affairs. She said many of the current issues that are important for faculty and students at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYCOM) of NYIT involve computing science and engineering.

"There's a strong scientific link to what we do," said Ross-Lee, noting that a central tenet of osteopathic manipulative medicine involves structure and function, two areas that are also central to engineering.

One presentation focused on the computing improvements necessary to ensure more accurate electronic health records. Another current research project is the development of a secure "wireless highway," or Wi-Hi, to monitor patients. The third presentation summarized the development of 3-D body models that are more accurate in understanding abdominal injuries.
