Old Westbury, NY – Following a visit to NYIT's Adele Smithers Parkinson's Disease Treatment Center, two Macedonian medical experts say they hope to strengthen their country's programs and resources for people with the disease.

The trio of visitors—the doctors and the head of a new Macedonian Parkinson's Disease foundation—met with Tom Scandalis, Dean of NYIT's New York College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYCOM) and several NYCOM faculty members this week.

"For us, it's very rewarding—these things we only read about," said Dr. Bojan Boskovski, a neurologist at the University of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Clinic of Neurology.

Therapist William Werner introduced the doctors to latest physical therapy methods and equipment Parkinson's Disease patients can use at the Adele Smither's Center, located within NYCOM's Riland Academic Health Care Center. Scandalis and Ely Rabin, an assistant professor in the Dept. of Neuroscience and Histology, also explained the benefits of a custom motorized walker Rabin and others are perfecting to help Parkinson's patients negotiate obstacles.

Dragi Filopvski, the head of the new Foundation of Parkinson's Disease Patients, was diagnosed in recent years with Parkinson's Disease. A business and marketing official, he noted how his life has changed dramatically with the diagnosis and how he hopes the foundation, the first of its kind in Macedonia, will help more people understand the disease and get proper treatment. Boskovski and another medical doctor said they also wanted to explore potential partnerships and share research with NYCOM experts.
