NYIT-Abu Dhabi Celebrates with Grads & Alumni

May 31, 2017

Recent graduates and their families gathered with alumni last week at two events celebrating connections made at NYIT (New York Institute of Technology). First, NYIT-Abu Dhabi’s eleventh graduation ceremony honored 66 new graduates, who earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Next, an alumni dinner welcomed new graduates and past years’ NYIT graduates, encouraging networking and connection to the university. More than 100 graduates and guests attended each of the two events.

A number of leaders and influencers spoke at the graduation ceremony, including NYIT Interim President Dr. Rahmat Shoureshi; Dr. Elias B. Sayah, president of Sayah Engineering Consulting Bureau and Vice Chairman of AmCham Abu Dhabi; and alumni award winners Mrs. Hanadi El Solh and Dr. Rassel Kassem. The new graduates, who earned degrees in business administration; interior design; instructional technology; and information, network, and computer security, also heard from one of their own, exemplary graduate Djan Valerine Javier, who just completed an Interior Design degree.

Shoureshi said that “even the best education, highest grades, and most careful planning will not prepare you for the twists and turns that life has in store for you.” Sayah, who has formed part of NYIT-Abu Dhabi’s board of industry advisors for several years, told graduates, “You have a solid and strong foundation; you now have to build a tall structure on that foundation, as you have seen around you in the various emirates.” And Javier echoed Shoureshi’s remarks, telling fellow members of the NYIT Class of 2017, “Failing is the first step towards your success, and I know that with what you take from NYIT, you will go far.”

For the third annual Middle East alumni dinner, held at the Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan, Haji Arif and Nassir Etout, successful business graduates of NYIT’s Class of 2014, talked about the value of higher education and of staying connected to NYIT’s alumni network. “Getting a degree is not the end,” said Arif. “It’s a new beginning.” Both men addressed how to develop mutually beneficial relationships with fellow alumni.
