NYIT Dean Encourages Sustainable Transport in Dubai

February 22, 2012

Dubai, U.A.E. – Praising Dubai's latest improvements in road safety and green public transportation, NYIT's dean of the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences delivered the keynote address at the 4th Dubai Award for Sustainable Transport (DAST) ceremony, under the patronage of Crown Prince and Chairman of the Executive Council Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Dubai public and private sector leaders in attendance also included Board Chairman and Executive Director of the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) Mattar Al Tayer.

"Sustainability is both a social and a corporate responsibility—while it requires policies and government commitment, sustainability brings economic opportunity and is ideal for private sector investments and private public partnerships in areas that range from water, to petroleum, power, energy, buildings, agriculture, information technology, manufacturing, and of course transportation," NYIT Dean Nada Marie Anid, Ph.D, said in her Feb. 14 address at the Dubai World Trade Center.

Anid's words of support touched on the importance of the United Arab Emirates Green Development Strategy, announced earlier this year by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president and prime minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai. The new plan emphasizes the need for a green economy that also promotes economic growth and global competitiveness.

"A green economy requires new knowledge, public outreach, awareness and media campaigns, educational programs and competitions," added Anid. "Let the U.A.E. lead the way and continue to surprise the world once more with its progressive vision and mission—a mission that is not impossible."

DAST is an initiative of the RTA. Attracting a record 93 submissions for this year's fourteen awards, the RTA's goal was to motivate both public and private sector participation in efforts to reduce traffic congestion and its impact on the environment.
